‘There are examples of outstanding practice, such as in the performing arts.’

Sandgate school believes that involvement in the arts provides a valuable means of self-expression for our pupils, opportunities for creative problem solving, and huge enjoyment. Music, art, dance and drama are used extensively throughout the curriculum as discrete and theme linked areas, and as a vehicle for wider learning.

Additional professionals are used to enhance the expertise shown by school staff.

Live music and theatre groups visit the school, and visits to music and drama productions take place both within and outside the school day.

The school has performed at the Dance Platform and La’al Sing at the Brewery Arts Centre for several years, and a Christmas production takes place every year.

An Arts week is held each year in the Summer Term which provides a whole school opportunity to become immersed in arts based experiences. Past themes have included Our Cumbria, Changes and West End Musicals.

The school has been awarded the Gold Artsmark, issued by the Arts Council, twice, in recognition of its commitment to the Arts. Older students have the chance to take the Arts award at Discover, and Bronze levels.
