PSHE at Sandgate School
Personal, Social, Health & Economic Education (EYFS – Post-16)
Our Vision
PSHE is central to preparing pupils for safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. It supports wellbeing, independence and positive participation in school, the community and adult life.
At Sandgate School, PSHE is an integral part of our everyday learning, from EYFS through to Post-16. We are committed to supporting our pupils to understand themselves, manage their feelings, build relationships, keep safe and develop the skills they need for life now and in the future.
Our PSHE curriculum is inclusive, personalised and practical, supporting learners across our MEADOWS, SEAS and LAKES pathways. Learning is carefully adapted to reflect each pupil’s stage of development, communication needs and sensory profile. Planning is guided by the PSHE Association SEND Framework, ensuring learning is well sequenced, appropriate and accessible for all pupils.
What We Teach
PSHE at Sandgate is organised around six core areas:
· Self-Awareness: identity, preferences, strengths and self-advocacy
· Self-Care, Support & Safety: personal care, consent, online safety and staying safe
· Managing Feelings: emotional regulation, wellbeing and positive relationships
· Changing & Growing: body awareness, puberty, relationships and sexual health
· Healthy Lifestyles: physical health, hygiene, food, exercise and mental wellbeing
· The World I Live In: community, citizenship, money, work, careers and independence Across all areas, SoSafe! Tools and principles are embedded to support consistent understanding of relationships, boundaries, consent, safety and self-advocacy in a way that is appropriate to each pupil’s needs.
How PSHE Is Delivered
PSHE is taught through a combination of planned sessions and learning embedded throughout daily routines, relationships and real-life experiences. Teaching uses visual, multi-sensory and experiential approaches and is closely linked to wellbeing, regulation, life skills, community access and work experience.
Where appropriate, learning is further enriched through partnership work with external services, including organisations such as Barnardo’s, to support safeguarding, relationships education, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood.
Progression Across the School
· EYFS Pupils begin to develop self-awareness, communication, emotional regulation
and an understanding of themselves and others through play, routines and sensory experiences.
· KS1 – KS2 Learning builds around relationships, feelings, safety, personal care and independence, with increasing opportunities to make choices, communicate needs and take part in everyday life skills.
· KS3 – KS4 Pupils develop a deeper understanding of emotions, relationships, body changes, safety and independence. Learning includes statutory Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way and linked closely to real-life contexts, community participation and Preparation for Adulthood.
· Post-16 & Preparation for Adulthood In Sixth Form, PSHE supports students working from WTEL1 to Level 3, with a strong focus on independence, self-advocacy, healthy relationships, money management, community participation, employment and understanding adult services. RSE continues in line with statutory guidance, carefully adapted to individual needs. A planned rolling programme ensures depth, continuity and clear progression over time.
Assessment & Progress
Progress is monitored through EHCP and IEP outcomes, Sandgate Progression Pathways, Evidence for Learning, Trackable and GridMaker, with ASDAN accreditation used where appropriate in KS4 and Post-16.
