Sixth Form – Scafell & Skiddaw
In the LAKES (Living, Academic, Knowledge, Education, Skills) pathway there are two Post-16 Key Stage 5 classes: Skiddaw and Scafell. There are about 8 students in each class.
These are parallel classes, following the same curriculum and often mixing for group activities, as well as for social times. Students are in these classes for up to 3 years, between the ages of 16 and 19, preparing for adulthood; sampling post-19 options; building emotional resilience and tools for self-regulation; and gaining work experience.
There are also joint activities, and options for students to pursue particular interests, with Bowfell, the SEAS pathway Post-16 class. The three Post-16 classes collaborate closely to provide the 'best fit' Sandgate experience for each student, supporting achievement for all.
Over the 3 years in Post-16, activities include: Taster courses at Kendal College, including Animal Care, Hair and Beauty, and Catering. Visits to post-19 settings to explore future options. Pearson Entry Level Functional Skills in Maths, English and ICT. BTEC Pre-Vocational Studies (incorporating Maths, English and ICT skills). The Skills Builder programme and Careers Guidance. ASDAN Life Skills Challenges. Food technology, swimming, PE and a choice of wellbeing and enrichment activities.
Work experience and volunteering, including placements at Castle Green Hotel, the National Trust at Fell Foot, Ragtag Arts and Scrap Store, Westmorland Football Association, Tebay Services, and our own catering kitchen. PSHE, including the So Safe programme. Outings and projects in the community, developing independent planning and travel skills. Options to link with Queen Katherine School for particular interests.
We look forward to welcoming new students to Post-16 and supporting each individual to explore their interests, manage challenges, and prepare for positive fulfilling futures beyond Sandgate.
