Lakes
The LAKES Pathway is an acronym for life skills, academic knowledge and employability skills.
Students are identified as likely to follow the LAKES Pathway at Reception and Year 1 in school. At this stage, they are likely to remain in a mixed pathway class. As students move through school into Key Stages 2 and 3, classes become more focused in their Pathway and students attend LAKES Pathway classes. Students have complete access to the National Curriculum which is tailored to their interests and strengths. As well as Academic progress, the curriculum also has an emphasis on Life and independent living skills.
In Year 9, students begin work towards sitting exams for externally accredited awards. Students work towards Functional Skills qualifications in English, Maths and Science. These qualifications begin at Entry Level Certificate 1 and progress through to ELC 2 and 3. It is possible for students to progress and achieve Level 1 and 2 awards in Functional Skills through into Sixth Form. If a student has a key strength in an academic subject it is possible for them to work towards a GCSE in a particular subject by accessing mainstream lessons alongside Queen Katherine students.
In Key Stage 4 and 5 students have access to work experience placements at the RagTag Community Arts Store, Ellan Skaife orchard (Lythe Valley), Tebay services, Castle Green Hotel and individualised placements with other providers. Students also prepare for their next steps by accessing college placements at Kendal and Lancaster and Morecambe College.
