Helping our students find their potential

Communication forms the basis of our English and Literacy delivery. An individual communication assessment will determine the personal progression pathway each child will take.  Prereading, reading, prewriting , writing, and speaking and listening are addressed in an age appropriate way.   We use the Twinkle phonics’ strategy.

Targets are set in line with progression guidance for English and progress is measured using our Sandgate Steps assessment tool.  As students progress through school English is delivered  within a thematic based curriculum approach up to Key Stage 3 and then, depending on personal pathways either a more formalised accreditation route or continued focus on communication and functional skills.

As our students progress through school, we also promote the use of functional Literacy and English. This may include developing communication strategies to get needs met or developing a bank of functional words to read that will support access to the community. These functional skills are critical for our students when they leave Sandgate School.
